generally around £250 including coding for other makes i have owned

But he'll need everything, he's lost the ONLY key.
I know. On a Vx you can get a cut key supplied and coded (by Vx) if there are no other keys. I think the key arrives at the dealers already cut - they get in to the car with it and can code the key from there... He would just need the AA to get his car to the dealers.

Or - what am I missing?

You need the ignition on to code the key, that proposed new key won't switch the ignition on as its not authorized/coded. The alarm will go off as soon as you try.

if you've lost you key you have to go into VW give them your V5 with VIN number and ID and they will give you a spanking new key fob from germany takes about 7 days to come costs £140 then £70 to get programmed to your car. i know it happened to me couple of months back i dropped my key in the canal lol.

forgot to include you have to get the car towed to the dealers to get the key coded in if you have AA/RAC/GreenFlag then your fine.

You will need to get a new key from VW or some auto locksmiths can cut one by dismanteling the lock barrel, but as long as you can get the SKC you don't need to go to the dealers to get the key programmed anyone can do it with vagcom :afro:

Which you can do without a key if you take the steering wheel surround off and remove the ignition switch from the barrell  :nerd: or use the new key blank you get cut at an auto locksmiths to power the car in, it doesn't matter about the immobiliser light being on.

You can't do that. Without the key being programmed, the immob won't let you in and the alarm will go off as soon as you try - that's what the 'chip' 'programmed key' is for, otherwise people would be stealing cars quite easily like in the old days.
