Dont have these on mine but like you have said, dont think retrofit would be a cheap option epecially if you then start breaking the mirror glass.  Think ill live without the puddle lights and just be careful where im parking.

Not a cheap retrofit, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=188931.0

You can also fit lights in the bottom of the door were the reflectors are.
I have a kit to do just that as I miss them in the golf after using the Leon

Bugger........ I was hoping that the GTi had lights in the bottom of the doors rather than just reflectors

No, that will be the Skodas and Seats

However an easy retrofit.

Remove the door panel, clip in the light to replace the current reflector, 2 wires to connect per door to the door controler in the door, re fit doorpanel repeat on other doors. Stand back and admire your work.
Some require coding to activate the voltage to the lights, some don't.

There use to be a good HOW-TO HERE but the entire site seems to be down at the moment.

I think SteveP looked after it, maybe worth a PM to him for the instructions.

The mk5 site is having a few issues according to their Facebook page. It was hacked and has had issues since.
