Golf GTI mk 5 tickover rattle
« on: 15 June 2012, 19:16 »
Anyone suffering same incredibly annoying tickover rattle on their gti?
It's after warmed up
Worse after motorway jaunt
Rattle goes when revs pick up or start speeding ups from crawl
I've heard it'd might be to do with fuel lines???
And easily fixed dy dealer
Is there a DIY fix???

...........how old is the car?. They have a bit of a rattle on tickover due to the direct injection fuel system.Early AXX engine code did have problems with the cam chain & tensioners,my first one did & it's not a cheap fix.

Thanks for reply
It's a 2006/56
I'd heard they rattled like you said why
It's just had cam chain replaced when bought it
I gotta say there's no performance probs!!
It's my first golf gti and I'm sold after various BMW, audi's and ford capri's!

Hi Jim,sorry mate can't offer any further advice. Sounds like you have the later engine code. My first was the AXX code as in my first post. You say chain was replaced, any receipt to show if tensioner was replaced as well?.

I recently had it done on my 2006 BWA engine.
Replaced chain, tensioner and adjuster. Adjuster beeing the important and expensive part.

It sounds so much nicer now and I enjoy it much more when I thrash it.
I can recomend getting it done, but it is a bit expensive.

Sorry to jump in on this, but I seem to have a similar problem.

Car seems to tick like there is a stone caught in the tread of the tyre, only ticks when moving slowly (traffic) but when I go above 10mph (maybe even less) the ticking stops, and it doesn’t tick when on idle, not that I have heard anyway.

I have a 2005 GTI and I am pretty sure it is an AXX engine code. At about 50k miles the cambelt and water pump were changed. I am guessing the cam chain and other parts mentioned above would be totally different?

It doesn’t seem to affect performance, so is it something I should get fixed or is it safe to just leave it? I can only hear the ticking noise if I have my music off and the windows down, so I can easily live with it if it is not a major problem?
Mrk V, GTI, 3dr, DSG, heated seats, winter pack, cruise control, rear parking sensors and now thanks to GizzyWizzy and SteveP in the MK6 section a RCD 510. Awesome!

.........cam chain & tensioner etc are on the right hand side of the engine as you look in the engine bay. Having the cam belt/water pump changed won't make any differance to the  rattle.

...........it is,due to the direct fuel injection BUT if it sounds more like a diesel than petrol then def something wrong.
