Every mk5 gti I've looked at rattles a wee bit on idle, even an 07 with 20k on it. This 05 I'm collecting on Friday does it very slightly on tickover :)

So it seems mine does have the diesel sound, 05 with 48k. Its not as bad as a diesel (my sisters pd150 is worse) it is still very quick just sounds gay. Is it worth trying the chain & adjuster first or do the adjuster while im there? Will have to go to VW though as i dont trust any local 'specialists'. :)

Will it wait a couple of months whilst i suitably lube my ass for the imminent vw raping? I'll need to save up.

£345 inc vat to do the chain & tensioner and £347 if the adjuster pulley is worn. That's at my stealer too so didn't think it was too bad :)

I had the same anxieties when I first bought my Gti. It's definitely the direct injection. My mechanics are VAG specialists and they must have had to reassure me 40 times, due to my paranoid, neurotic tendencies

On cold days mine too, can sound like a diesel. It's a bit embarrassing really, considering all the other petrol rivals of this Gti that I've driven, such as the Type-R and the VXR all seem to start and sound so much more refined and petrol like. Still I wouldn't change it for the world.

Just going to bump this for any future searchers mainly.

My golf has just been in for the chain and tensioner replacing, the chain was fooked. Fully fooked! Apparently there was loads of slack and twisting movement once it was off. Knowing what i know now I'd have changed it long ago just incase it decided to snap

My friendly vw specialist did it with genuine parts and also changed the dsg oil & filter for new vag parts for less than £500 all in, well worth it! I can hear the fuel pump rattle now, its oddly nice to hear it
