I don't understand why anyone would buy a brand new car. Too many things to go wrong with modern cars and always cost an arm and a leg to repair. Then you have the colossal depreciation on top of that.

It's only going to get worse with electronics, look at the automatic brake features in cars coming out with front sensors. Then there's multiple camera units and multiple sensors so it parks itself. Soon they will just drive themselves just look at what volvo has been working on and whats on the new A6 audi... Also look at the new systems, such as the turbo / supercharger system in the new engines then the turbo's with the variable geometry. TBH it may just be cheaper to buy a plane or blimp to get to work since public transport sucks

Then there's variable lift, the flaps on inlets, then there's talk of camless engines, variable compression engines, so the crank would get complex... But chances are we will start seeing more electric motors appearing as well driving rear wheels powered by a diesel or petrol engine, then the possibility of two separate electric engines on the front wheels and so on and on...

Some sucker has to purchase them and loose the money on them for more sensible folk to buy them later on

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

to much unoptional extra crap in cars and vans now.

i don't want over fluffyfyed controls,  and electric adjustment on things i never adjsut.

went into vw a few months ago to buy a new van,   was quite prepared to pay for it then and there and drive it away. but one snag

I like electric windows but hate electric mirrors but new caddy  has electric mirrors if you have electric windows.  electric mirrors are expensive van's have a habbit of sheding mirrors  and it's not like anyone else would ever drive it so why need electric adjustment ???

rant over
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I quite like my "new" car and as something that I use as a daily Ill take the comfort and looks of a "newer" car. (I realise mine is now 7 years old).

Yes things go wrong but that happens on all cars. You old man sounds like he has drawn the short straw on a few occasions.

we seem to change alot of turbos on newer comon rail engines tbh. same as abs pumps. vws have loads of gay little faults, they just cant build a cheap reliable car can they? since they brought that new vw up out weve not stopped working on them! gear boxes, clutches packing up due to been made crap.. older vws were alot better, i know mk4 golfs have alot of common faults but new ones are even worrst!

If you are wondering where all the new paint has gone from cars... then you only need to look inside a VW up  :lipsrsealed:

I love it in threads like this when the patrolling mechanic pips up and says:

"New cars are rubbish and I have to fix lots of them which proves it".

Here's the flaw in said logic:

1) You're a mechanic. You're job is to fix things. Therefore you are only ever going to see the faulty products. Yes you may see 10 new cars a day, but what percentage is those 10 cars of the total number of new cars sold?

2) You're day at the dealer is filled with fixing new cars primarily because those with older cars either fix their cars themselves or don't want to pay dealer rates when they know a much cheaper independent garage. Therefore you're again exposed only to new cars with faults.

I don't think new cars are any worse than "old" cars would have been when new. Bit of the rose-tinted specs I reckon.
