It's only going to get worse with electronics, look at the automatic brake features in cars coming out with front sensors. Then there's multiple camera units and multiple sensors so it parks itself. Soon they will just drive themselves just look at what volvo has been working on and whats on the new A6 audi... Also look at the new systems, such as the turbo / supercharger system in the new engines then the turbo's with the variable geometry. TBH it may just be cheaper to buy a plane or blimp to get to work since public transport sucks

Then there's variable lift, the flaps on inlets, then there's talk of camless engines, variable compression engines, so the crank would get complex... But chances are we will start seeing more electric motors appearing as well driving rear wheels powered by a diesel or petrol engine, then the possibility of two separate electric engines on the front wheels and so on and on...
