You've managed to hit a fair number of the "eternal debates" .

I'll be as brief as possible.

Edition 30:
Standard: Faster and better spec'd than a standard GTI. Slower than an R32. Marginally more expensive to run than a GTI.
Tuned: Fastest car of the bunch. More BHP per £££ than the R32.

R32:
Standard: 4WD (Haldex), NA 3.2l engine so good power delivery, fantastic noise but expensive to run.
Tuned: More £££ per BHP than a turbocharged car.

Mk5 GTI:
Standard: Probably the sweetest of the bunch. Decent performance, subtle, cheaper.
Tuned: Map should see 240hp. Map, exhaust and intake should see 260bhp.

Mk6 GTI:
Standard: "10%" better in most aspects than a Mk5 (interior, power, economy
Tuned: Maps pretty close to an Edition 30.

I had a Mk6 GTI. I mapped mine. I've gone back to a MINI only because I wanted something smaller again.

Thanks penguin that's very helpful. I guess I was trying to understand if a mapped ed30 gains back that little extra kick on the low revs that the std gti seems to have. 10% of the mk6 doesn't seem enough in my case to justify £7/8K extra pounds (for an 09 plate) on top although they look really neat

Does the r32 push at low revs more or less than the mk5 gti?

Money no object for me would be MK6 GTI as its newer and fancier and all that sh!t.

However I assume money is an object and for that reason its got to be the ED30. Simples.

If it was between an immaculate Mk5 GTI and a ragged Mk6 then I'd take the Mk5. If both cars were the same condition I'd take the Mk6, even if it was a bit more expensive because it is just that bit nicer than the Mk5 inside (I've had a Mk5 also btw).

Yep, exactly my point. I assume all cars will be of similar condition.

don't want to upset anyone, but if a R32 is faster than a ED30, then id forget getting one of those

R32s are just not fast.... at all
