smoking a dad...

Right the other week I changed my head gasket.. rare on an abf but guess just unlucky, at the same time put freash oil in and new oil stem seals (or what ever they called)
Now iv had it back running just under a week and noticed two things..

1. On start up, but then more so when pulling off from 1st to 2nd (mostly when warm) there's a fair bit of smoke, now I wear tinted glasses so can't really tell the colour lol
2. As I said i put a fresh oil in the car and a new filter. Was slightly above the max line... and now 5 days later its nearly empty! Had an oil light flash up!

Any ideas

they do tend to sometimes smoke after new seals mate..give it a bit more time.. either that or the seals are not so great/poor fitment

Sounds like something has gone astray when changing the stem seals, is it smoking on tickover or just when cold/revving?

I take it it didn't smoke before changing the head gasket?

Or changing the valve stem oil seals?

Didn't you put the seals on the same way round as the old ones you took off?

You are defo burning all your oil, thats for sure if your coolant is staying the same level, not mixing with the oil or over heating.

i assumed it would burn a bit of oil but not nearly 4 litres!

i had the place that skimmed my head do the seals so no idea if they are in right  id assume so!

it didnt smoke one bit before the head gasket change.

im not totally sure about the oil/coolant mix as there was still some gunk left in the system, but iv done a flush just now and going to drive it tomorrow to work and see what happens then.

so will see thursday if the oil is still mixing with the coolant!

When fitting valve stem seals it is recommended to slip something over the top of the valve to avoid damaging the new seal, maybe they have nipped a seal hence the smoke.

Well it can only be one of two things, you have only changed the head gasket (I take it) and they changed the seals. Either the oil is getting into the cylinders from the block/head oil ways past the gasket or the head gasket is one the wrong way around and the holes in the gasket aren't lined up with the oil ways (this would mean water ways don't line up too). Or the oil is passing valve stem seal and dropping down past the valves into the cylinders, by burnt off and resulting in the smoke (blue).

oh and it smokes when first starting,
when its warm and iv stopped theres not loads. but when i pull off if i use about half throttle to pull off it smokes and then does again when changing to 2nd, then nothing afterwards

Just drove it this morning and the smoke does seem a white blueish. Colour. Hard to tell really. And it doesn't overheat
