Really? I thought a mk2 subframe was a mk2 subframe, just the bolt on engine mounts that differ

I believe so.  I'll do a final check when I'm standing over Dave's G2 later in the week, but the 1.3 is *quite* a different unit!

So can you not use mk3 shafts with 02a box in mk2 ?

Well that depends on what shafts and control arms you're talking about.

e.g.
G3 8V = widetrack and 020 gearbox
G3 TDI = narrowtrack and 02A gearbox
G3 16V = widetrack and 02A gearbox

So hopefully you can see each of those will probably have a different combination of shafts on it.

So if you're running narrow track with 02A gearbox you would need G3 TDI shafts to suit.

If you're running widetrack with 02A gearbox you would need G3 16V shafts to suit.

Golf3 shafts covers a multitude of different combinations!

What would the 1.9d (non turbo) mk3 have then? It had an 020 rod change box, and I've kept the frame under the impression the driveshafts and wishbones are longer etc?

Narrow-track 020, so the same shafts as a G2 GTI and 16V, *probably* with the 100mm inner CVs.

So a mk3 diesel non turbo is no different to a 8v/16v mk2 in driveshaft lengths/wishbones/track rods?

Gutted if that is the case, I assumed all mk3's were widetrack, and the di and tdi's were the ones to have as they're 4 bolt..

So, just to round this out.  Here's the 1.3 subframe that's currently in Dave's Golf:

and here's the G3 subframe that he has:

Taking the measuring stick out it looks like the G3 mount finishes at 200mm from the top of the flat bit of the frame.  Measuring the G2 subframe in the same way gives 180mm height.

I think we'll try the 1.8T on the G3 subframe and see how it fits.  If there are issues we'll swap it out for the G2 frame and see if there's any difference.
