Had a text off my brother this morning saying his his golf wouldn't start last night. He said it was running fine before he parked it up.

Said he tried it 3 times and the 3rd time it flashed up "oil pressure, stop motor" so just left it. Does this sound like the common sludge/pick up pipe problem and would replacement oil pump and pipes cleaned be a good place to start?

Any help would be appreciated

I would have thought it would still start though if it was just a blocked pipe and then cut out? But then if its the sensor maybe not  :undecided:

Well just had the neighbor look at the car and he says the timing belt has gone. Probably slipped its teeth at the bottom
Anyone had this happen to them and if so have an idea of the costs involved? Car wasn't running when its happened so hopefully there isn't much damage.

The belt won't have gone with the engine off. You'll have to whip the head off to assess the damage.

+1

could be any amount of damage... only real way to find out though is to take it apart and have a look...

Is there no other way of assessing for damage apart from taking the head off?

A compression test will confirm the worst. You will need to fit a new belt first for this.

I dont see how the cambelt has snapped parked up overnight, youd have known if it had gone when driving and you say it was fine. I reckon its something else personally from what youve said
