foam arch sound insulation
« on: 09 June 2012, 22:12 »
the foam in the front wheel arches of my car gets soaked every time i wash it and takes ages to drain out

i think i remember snoopy having an issue or a fix with this?

is there an updated foam to fit in there (bottom of front wheel arch - you can see the foam when you open the front doors)

this should be more like styrofoam i reckon not a sponge like foam. this is just asking for corrosion to occur on mk6's

anyone done anything with theirs?

Simply they should have been made out of closed cell foam not open cell like every other car maker uses...
My current ones are covered in waxoyl at the moment.
I also have a set of 2011 spec ones in the house that i will coat with a sealent and fit at some point.
The 2011 ones unlike my original 2010 spec ones are covered in latex! but due to poor VW depo handling have been ripped in a few places.(why i have not fitted them)
So i need to visit one of those fetish shop places to buy some latex body paint

What do the 2011 is look like? Mine is August 2011 and they look the same as your videos.

I can just say get my fingers in and the feel wet. Not sure if mine are updated?

Is it just a case of arch liner off to get to them? Mine has mudflaps too so they will need removing.

Cheers

Yes just arch out and they pull out.
Yours should be the same spec of my new ones there about the same age ie mid 2011.

next time i see you/your car i will have a look and see if they're the same

I've got a feeling mine aren't the new ones though the photographs you sent me both look very similar so its hard to tell :undecided:

Going to send some new photos by email as just went and dug the new ones out the draw.
New ones look more or less black with rubber latex feel.
Old ones look grey and have foam feel.
That foam stays wet for weeks.
That video was iirc 2 weeks after the car was washed or been out in the rain and had been used daily to commute in that time.

mine looks similar to the new style you emailed me.

mine are smoother type and you can't really see any holes in the foam like a sponge.

it still holds water though?!

on the photo you sent where one piece is damaged and you can see the foam inside. is that what the old style look like without the coating?

Those new ones I have were from June 2011 so yours will be the same or a newer version again.

Would spraying them with Plastikote or something similar work by giving them a skin coat over the foam structure?
