Last time I tried mine, they didn't. I assume they should (otherwise it's pretty pointless having one in the boot!!!). Does the car turn them off if the battery is getting low? I don't see why mine should be low but it would make sense.

Thanks,
Scott

i want to use my trickle charger thru the boot (as i can't open the bonnet in my garage) but can only charge thru the boot socket if ignition is on i think.

Yea pretty annoying, my 2005 MK5 GTI kept them on, I think it was changed in 2007/8 in the MK5 and then the MK6.

I was going to change it on the Fuse box (Fuse 42) to a permanent live circuit but when I looked at it, " Blocking diode 2" was also at that location and I wasn't sure what that was connected to, it may be just the protection diode for the 12v socket circuit.

Out of interest, does the car switch off the radio etc if the battery is low (and the engine isn't running) so it's still possible to start the car. If I sit there and listen to some music, watch a film, will the car allow the battery get too low is basically what I'm asking?

The RCD510 that I have in my car has an auto switch off function; the unit switches itself off after approximately 30 minutes if it's been switched on and the engine's not running. I'm assuming the RNS510 has this too. It's in the manual under 'switching on and off' or 'switch off delay' (page 8 in the RCD510 manual).

don't think mine is set to 30 mins. seems a lot shorter than that but never checked that option.

I'm sure mine once showed a message saying to conserve battery power switch the radio off or something.

Cheers!

I think I'm gonna see what magic I can work in the fuse box to make the 12v in boot a permanent live
