Problems Galore :(

Hi all, got a few problems with my mk4 1.8 turbo.

1) I think my front left wheel bearing has had it. I hear a drone at 30mph+, feel vibrations on the floor, and I jacked the car up today to inspect it, the wheel wobbles slightly on the axle. Needless to say, something is wrong. I just wanted to double check that it was the bearings after all.

2) On a possibly related, but most likely not related note. My Emissions light has come on too. Now, the car has been remapped to 180bhp-ish. I seem unable to obtain anything over 35mpg even when I drive slowly and smoothly. It smells like its burning rich, there is a strong smell fro mthe exhaust if I'm totally honest.

Any information, advice or help on any of this would be great! I havent got much money at the moment (had to buy new glasses and sunglasses which are effing expensive). Any garages in the Wiltshire area that you know of?

1. Does sound like a bearing especially if the there's play
2. Does it have decat or performance exhaust and I sat on the m5 @ 60 yesterday and still only got 35.4mpg

Yeah, how much do you think a garage would charge for a wheal bearing to be replaced?

And as for the emissions light - i'm still at a loss. The coil packs are reliatively new (last year) the engine runs beautifully - no misfire. The exhaust is the standard one, no changes to that. I think it might be the lambda sensor? But havign said that, it could be a mixture problem as again, it smells very rich.

possible lambda. Need to get it scanned to see which sensor it is though.

I'd love to see 35mpg lol. Driving slowly doesn't mean you'll see higher MPG, it will probably lower it if anything

Well, I say slowly, I mean smoothly and efficiently. My car is best at 50-60. By the loks of it, my MPG is pretty standard for the 1.8T.

As I said, it's had a remap to 180bhp - would that explain the extra strong smell from the exhaust?

I really hope it's not expensive. I can't afford to have to replace a wheel bearing AND anything else. I just can't afford it right now.

if you leave the bearing too long it can wear the hub. Lambdas are around £80

You need it scanned to see if the lambda is definitely goosed

The bearing, as a matter of safety, I will get fixed as soon as possible. As for the sensor, I'm waiting for my fault code reader to arrive in the post, and I'll see what code it throws up at me.

Assuming it is the lambda, whereabouts is it located? I know literally nothing about it.

what engine code do you have mate?

The lambdas are located before and after the catalyst. AGU only has a lambda before the catalyst

I couldn't tell you unfortunately, how would I find out the engine code? It's a 01 model if that helps?

I have a 1.8t anniversary and on drive from south Yorkshire to Blackpool today mine reached 36.5 sat most way between 70 to 80mph
