« on: 30 May 2012, 18:43 »
I have oil leaking from my sump gasket from a couple of places, only slight but time to change I fear.Is it a straight forward process, just drain oil undo all nuts then replace or is there more involved? 16v engine if that make any difference ta

That's about it. Just make sure it's all nice and clean when you put it back together. You could put a bit of gasket sealer on the surfaces as well to give it a bit more chance. And do the screws up from the centres and side to side first, working to the ends.

Think about upgrading to a mk3 rubber gasket, the mk2 one is basically thick brown paper.

I'd be half tempted to stick a new oil pump in :lipsrsealed:

Do it with the engine stone cold, much less messy and as Thom said it might be worth fitting a new oil pump whilst it is apart.

Or at least drop the mesh and clean it

Out of interest, Is it necessary to use gasket sealer as well as the rubber gasket?

I would not use sealant, if any drops into the sump it can block the pick up pipe.

sealant on sumps is an engine killer as said.

99.95 %  of diy mecanics  put way to much sealant on thinking they are doing a better job.   problem is  if any squidges out on the outside you can bet your life at least as much has squidged out on the inside.

hot oil has magical ablity to loosten these bits  they will clog the oil pump pickup.

get it all clean,  don't overtoque the bolts and no need for sealer,
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
