I always apply a liberal amount on the gasket to hold it in place when lining it up stops the gasket moving when your offering  it up,  I do agree that people tend to smoother it with silicone.  A bit common sense is the order of the day. Good luck

the two bolts up against the bell housing can be a bit of a ballache to get at, 1/4" drive narrow sockets needed. so its advisable to remove these first to make sure you can get them off before doing the others

ECP does an Elring rubber sump gasket for decent money

This is the gasket I bought
http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.6_1992/p/car-parts/engine-parts/engine-parts1/car-gasket-seals/?367440160&1&9fd4ef83c659812dfff3705ac20aea028834a266&000565

All the parts I have bought from this website arrive with eurocarparts stickers on (which I dont really understand), but they are cheaper even with the 25% off, worth a look
EPC sell this gasket for £24.60

nice find...

that website is a skinned version of the ECP website, so everything that exists on ECP exists on the one above, cheaper...but no discounts can be applied - just use part numbers to search the sites

worthwhile comparing on both sites to get cheapest deal :)

Also, with ECP to get the 25% off, your basket has to have a value of at least £20, which can get annoying if you want the odd, cheap part.

I brought a rubber one as suggested replaced it(bit fiddly  underneath the car) but didn't use sealer and two weeks and 300 miles later no leaks fingers crossed

Thanks for the info.  I'll be a guinea pig for the VWH one and see how it goes :) .
