Here's a point.

How much do you recon a golf would cost if it had a 3.0 litre 6 cylinder twin turbo with 320 hourse power and rear wheel drive (or 4x4) ?

How much is an rs3? £40k

I recon about £35k
I don't believe in global warming, sorry.
How are speed bumps legal?

I was looking at the 1 series M coupe. Seriously quick for the money. Not bad looking either. And no understeer.

But for me, the GTD is just far more practical (and economical) for everyday use. And the 1 series hatch is seriously fugly.

The test drive results for the new Audi A3 are starting to appear. Only available in 3 door in September. Looks like the prices may be similar to the current range.

To me, if you want a performance hatch for under £30k you simply won’t be able to beat the M135i particularly with the standard spec it comes with.

I saw someone earlier in the thread comment on the plastics in the BMW!!! They clearly haven’t looked at the extremely poor plastics in their Golf.

The Golf just isn’t in the same league for quality as the Audi's and BMW's.

Me/ waits for all the VW cultist's to rip me a new one.....

Not sure that I will wait for the Mk7 Golf (R) either. Seriously tempted by the Merc A class AMG and it looks like it'll be around the same price as the BMW and probably the MK7 Golf R. Going to be available earlier as well by the looks of it.

That's the next car I'll look seriously at.
It has the potential to be great...but then, so did the RS3

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

It'll partly depend on the standard spec for me, otherwise it will probably be very easy to turn a £30k car into a £35 - £40k one.... But the rumoured performance is very promising - perhaps VW will have to respond?

As much as I think it's a great looking car, Merc's just aren't that great to drive. They're comfortable, relaxing but not really hot hatch material  :undecided:.

*cough* Black Series cars?

If AMG to a proper job and sort the chassis out, and the engine is a typically monumental AMG affair, it will be worth the near £40k price it will likely be.

Put things into perspective...a Golf R in the spec I'd want is £39k

And lets be honest, it's a long time since a Golf GTI was a true Hot Hatch.
Even more so the R.
The target audience has changed...plenty of people are happy to pay £40k+ for a numb steering, awfully damped Aldi that's dull as dishwater to drive, because it's quick from A to B...why not a Merc?

Reducing my Golf count by the week....

Not many Black series cars are around the £40k mark though... try £100k

As stated above the "propper" mercedes cars ie 500 V8 enigned, AMGs etc are very, very capable machines (Given no snow, standing water blah lol)
