Depends what you want/need. The GTi is fun and practical all in one package where as the 1 series isn't. There are always compromises. If it was me ED35 and a re map.
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

If the wife's 123d 1 series cab continues being as good as it has been so far in the few weeks we've had it then a BMW will be next for me too. This was always VW's danger i.e. that they get more and more expensive to the point where people say they can get better, more prestigious cars for the money. Along comes the 135 for less than an R and Bob's your uncle, everybody's off down the BMW dealers!!!

And I have to say, the quality of our lass's Beemer is miles in front of my GTi. I do love my GTi but I'm not so blinkered as to not see its deficiencies.

Personally I'd take the GTI over the 135. Mapped the GTI is a very, very good car and if you like it then I wouldn't necessarily be looking to jump ship.

I was facing a similar dilemma when I was thinking in selling the GTI - for me the Edition 35 isn't worth the price premium I'd have had to pay over my existing GTI (same goes for the R which I notice you haven't listed - might be worth a think though). The GTD does offer better economy but I agree that going from a GTI to a GTD does feel like a bit of a step down.

If the price on your GTI isn't that bad I'd hold onto it until the MK7 is at least released. If you don't like the Mk7 then you'll be in a better position to consider the BMW but I wouldn't rush your decision.

Buy the GTI, use the cash allowance to fund the loan, then jump on the Mk7 GTI on the company car scheme...Then flog the current one.

Have you felt the plastic inside them beemers, all the things you touch and feel,

A gti with a £500 remap is about 250 hp an edition 35 remaped about 270 hp depending on the car.

A 135 with a £500 remap is 360 hp but with rear wheel drive it won't act all silly when you nail it. The biturbo will give you a lovely straight power curve that dosn't look like a camels hump.

I chopped in my gti after 6 months and went back to a BMW. I've bought a 335d remaped it's about 350 hp and 520 ft and it is much much faster than my remaped gti. In fact it's in a different legue to the golf but it was expensive.

Is it even fair to compare the 135 to a gti of any sort, I would think it's going to be faster than a golf R.

If I'm honest I'm not a massive fan of the look of the 1 series but I do quite like the 3 door hatch. Each to their own.

^^^^^ So a remapped ed35 only takes it up to R power, i thought a remap took it one up to 290- 315 bhp, is the R different as they claim 300bhp+ with just a remap , just curious.

Depends on who's map but most are 290+

1 Series are a nice car in coupe form not keen on hatchback, biggest issue for us though was space as its quite cramped (I'm 6'3") which ruled it out sadly.

135 offers an awful lot of performance

If you don't need rear seats or a decent boot then the 1 series would be an option.
Any that I have hired out I always thought the internal plastics were a bit plasticky and much prefer the MK6.

However that straight six turbo would be a corker..

It all depends on the individual car and how generous and honest the guys rolling road is

It's not a good idea to put touch power through the front wheels anyway is it they go a bit daft and silly, that's why the R has 4x4.
