can i just remove the exhaust heat shield?
« on: 25 May 2012, 10:07 »
hi guys, basically the heat shield has seen better days, all the clips are f**ked near enough so it rattles like mad off itself and the exhaust.

ive tried doing stuff with the clips, araldyte etc etc and nothing will hold it. will i have any issues if i remove it ? the fuel lines dont run under it do they

cheers

Fine to remove it. It will get warmer inside the car and if your ragging it and the exhaust gets very hot you could melt your carpet

Better to leave it fitted.

its a strange one as i had mk3 gti with heat shields removed and had no heat issues. but i have also had a gti with all heat shields and i had mega heat probelms under the floor to the point where the gear stick used to get to hot to touch. but even when mine got that hot it never melted anything and never caused a problem apart from a hot gear stick. but that was due to having a larger sebring strait pipe section that sat very close to the heat shield.
so i doubt it will cause any problems or melt anything but i wouldnt want to say yes its fine as VW did fit it for a reason.
only thing i would worry about is if your cat ever packs up as they can get very hot and even glow red hot.

when a couple of my clips broke i bodged it by pushing it on and hammering the bolt bit over instead of a clip. job done and it never cam off again

I once put big penny washers on where the clip should go and then cable tied them up  :lipsrsealed:

Buy new clips??

the part on the car they clip onto have nearly all rusted off which is the issue so theres nothing for the clips to attach too

someone said leave it as it is, aint really an option youd want to kill yourself after 5 minutes in my car its unbearable and very loud.

wrapping it sounds like the best option, what sort of price is a role of it ?
