Yeah im guessing they have the same colour golf and they are going to take a trip to get some free petrol! Deffo go to the police as they will come knocking on your door if it happens anyway.

Report it, but now I guess for a short while you can rag it around, get some free petrol from a non cctv equipped station and run away from the law and when they come knocking just say it was those bloody thieves again

reported it to the police, got my crime reference number

house across the street has cctv, not sure if it would of picked up the car but will check with them

Who said it has to be a Golf? Any car will be able to sport the plates if they're not on for long and changed often... Once they've done a crime it doesn't matter to them if they've got the same model car as the plates came off.

Because, if it's on a Golf of the same colour then it'll get away with a lot more and a for a lot longer than if it weren't, on the PNC until there's a marker to pull the vehicle up.
