Running problem
« on: 21 May 2012, 23:52 »
OK, girlfriend brought her golf over the other day and complained it wasn't running very well. So took it for a drive up the street and she wasn't wrong. Seemed to be very sluggish and no matter how much I depressed throttle didn't seem to want to respond. Nearly didn't get back, but eventually got home. After that I could only start it from cold and it will run for a minute at no more than 1000 rpm, if I depress the throttle it dies. After the intial minute or so of running like this it dies and then won't start until it has cooled down again.

As it is running from cold, I have assumed electrics are OK otherwise wouldn't start. With it stopping after running for a minute or so, I figured that may be it was a sensor issue. Read a few threads about the Crank Position Sensor, but don't think there is one on this model (its a 1993 1.6 with AEA Single point injection engine). I believe there is an Ignition Pulse sensor (at least I can find one for it at GSF), but not sure where that's located. Anyone know where it is? Does this seem like a likely fault or are there more obvious candidates?

Any help appreciated.

Sure on that engine code?

Deffo a 1.6 SPI yeah?

Check under the SPI unit to see if there is a rubber mounting that has split. Never personally seen a 1.6 SPI though.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

could be engine speed sensor/crank sensor.

it went on my car, wouldn't idle unless you had your foot on the throttle, wouldnt start up without the same. they seem to gradually die rather than one day cut out. previous owner said she had an issue with my car that sometimes at junctions it would cut out but she didnt know why.

best thing to do is get yourself a vag-com cable off ebay for like 7.50, connect it up to a laptop and see what fault codes it gives you.

Am sure it is Single Point injection - the only one is inside the throttle body and  according to the label in the boot its a 1.6. Have run VAG COM and this is the result:

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

Chassis Type: 1H - VW G/J/V Mk3
Scan: 01,02,03,08,15,25,56

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 01: Engine
   Controller: 032 906 026 D
   Component: 1,6l R4 MONO 1.3    D71
   Coding: 00000
   Shop #: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
            03-00 - No Signal
Readiness: N/A

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skipping Address 15-Airbags

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 25: Immobilizer
   Controller: 1H0 953 257 B
   Component: IMMO VWZ3Z0R8734712 V00
   Coding: 09600
   Shop #: WSC 00000
No fault code found.

End   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Am sure I have seen elsewhere that you always get the Hall sensor issue. So can anyone tell me where the crank/speed sensor is? On this engine it is definitely not underneath or by the side of the oil filter.

Did you run VAG COM with engine off? That could explain why the hall sensor is in the fault log....

So can anyone confirm if where the Ignition Pulse sensor on the 1.6? Or have any other ideas?

if its like the 1.8 (also SPI) the "ignition pulse sensor" which is actually called the Camshaft position sensor - its built into the dizzy.

Also the 515 code when scanned, means the engine isn't running - so ignore it.  If the cam sensor wasn't working - it wouldn't run at all.

Sounds coil or coolant temperature sensor related to me.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Well, the fact that it's not running at all now might indicate the Camshaft sensor then - is it easy to replace? This was what I was thinking is probably the main culprit, do these go quite quickly?

I was kind of discounting the coil as It had had a new one fitted about 18 months ago. I have a spare temp sensor, so can swap that out and see if it affects it.

I think you can change it, but you need to remove the dizzy I suspect.
