10/40w semi-synthetic and don't go too cheap, everyone has their favorites and i've been using millers oil for years.

been wondering the same for the 16v GTi.. I've topped her up with 10w-40, but apparently the vw owners manual that comes with the car also recommends 5w-30, same as my little fiesta???

I stuck with 0w40 or 5w40 with my old 2E 2.0, once used 5w50 cos I knew I was gonna drive it long distance, fully loaded and high speed through Germany ;) And Mobil 1 5w50 was cheaper at that point than 0w40. It had 380.636km (236.517mi) on the clock when scrapped and the engine still ran well then (needed less than 1/4L on 1000mi).

Personally I don't see why you'd use 10w40, not even saving money really when you can get 5 liters of 5w40 for less than 30£... in particular if you're running a lot of short trips...
gonna stop here though otherwise this'll turn into a useless oil thread (again)...

VW 5w30 LL3 504.00/507.00 is not too bad if not used for LL ;)

Other than that why pay more for LL3 if a 5w40 or even 0w40 that fulfills VW 502.00 (and/or MB229.5) is cheaper than that.
0/5w40 are also thicker at higher temperatures than most 5w30 and 10w40... could continue but my recommendation is a good 5w40 - or 0w40 if you running mostly short distances.

I think 5w/30 is too thin for the 8v and 16v, they are not exactly high tech motors and most will have done reasonable miles by now, 10w/40 semi is the best option in my opinion.

I use 5w40 fully synth.

Thinner oil when cold so smoother when cold, and not too thin when hot. Thin oils are designed for race/turbo applications.

5w30 is not necessarily too thin for a 2.0 GTI (8 and 16V), they have oil-water heat exchangers, which keeps the oil temp at very reasonable levels, I have not even exceeded 110°C full out for miles and miles on the Autobahn (with a fully packed estate)... VW LL3 is surprisingly stable at high temperatures and has about the same HTHS as cheap 10w40 oils. 0w30 LL2 is however $hit and will fück your engine, same as Ford's recommendation to run A1/B1 or A5/B5 oils...

Would be more worried with 5w30 oil in a 1.8 where you dont have an oil h/x.....

wheter you run 10w40 or 5w40 or even 5w30 is down to you... visco is not most important anyway but should roughly match conditions you're driving in... if you're mostly doing 1-5mi trips 10w/15w/20w won't be the best for your engine, then would go 0w or 5w...

I do appreciate what your saying but i think your looking too deeply in to it, if your running a high temperature turbo engine or something high revving and temperamental then oil choice becomes much more important but for an old 8v or 16v i think frequent changes with mid price 10w/40 or 5w/40 as Khare says would be much more beneficial.
