Need tips for paint & lacquer correction
« on: 15 May 2012, 16:26 »
I've got a summer to do list for the car, which includes a lot of bodywork as it's looking very tired and there's a few bits of rust starting to appear.

I'll get pics up when I can.

1. There's a section of lacquer peel on the rood near the rain gutter. It's about the size of a 50p and a 20p put side by side. What's the best way to sort this out? Sand down, primer, paint and lacquer?

2. On the driver's door on the edge of the non hinge side, the bit that always hits walls etc, the paint has been chipped well off and there's some rust starting to appear. I'm I right in thinking sanding, primer, paint and lacquer? Same as above?

3. On the rear quarter panel there's 2 deep scratches with a tiny spot of rust at the deepest point. What the best way to treat these? I'm going to need a tad of filler for this scratch, as I said it's deep, around 1mm deep or so.

4. On the tailgate, where the plastic light and number plate surround meets the metal there's some paint chipped off and a hint of rust starting to bubble up. Again, is it sanding the area, primer, paint and lacquer?

5. Roof again, a small bubble of rust. Sand, prime, paint, lacquer?

6. Front bumper has some scratches on the side. For plastic, what's the best way to sort it? Same as metal? (Sanding, primer, paint, lacquer?).

7. What's the best way to make sure paint blends in with the original paint around it?

8. What sandpaper is best for a) Metal b) Plastic?

9. Best place to get the paint in a spray can? Paint is Mystic Blue LC5L. Better from Halfords or straight from VW (which is pretty expensive from what I remember).

It's the first time I'll be undertaking any work with the paintwork so I'm pretty scared of messing it up and making it look like pants with it not blending etc.

Cheers!

I did some lacquer peel at the top of my A pillar the other week. When I had my mk3 I got the paint from VW, it was about £15 for 150ml of Basecoat, and 150ml Lacquer in rattle cans. I've heard alot of very good things about paints4u, and there was a chip kit in the glove from previous, and its obvious where it has been used. This is a fantastic match too. So I bit the bullet, and ordered the Paint kit from paints4u. Its about £30 incl delivery, but thats various wet n dry, 500ml primer, 400ml base, and 500ml lacquer, and some rubbing compound too. I looked at a few threads on DW to get best results, and the blend from a local bodyshop on the missus's car is worse than I got it imo!  :smug: Its a very good kit, and has good instructions too. Not sure about plastics, and with the deep scratches with rust showing through, obviously gonna be going back to bare metal there so you will need etch primer too.

Cheers Sean, will look into the paints4u kits, they sound like they come pretty complete and with enough paint/lacquer to do all the bits I'm looking to do!

Sean those kits looks awesome, detailed instructions too. I'll be getting the stuff from there. For filler, which one should I use? It's 2 scratches about 1 inch long and 1mm deep so not a lot of filler needed, just a pea sized amount really.

For the bumper I guess I'll be needing plastic primer, this one? http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=7254

This is the kit I'll be getting http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=5423, looks very good.

I really dont know about the filler tbh mate, I do have some standard halfords bought stuff but could never get a very good flat surface with it so cant recommend it. (only tried it once though). Correct for plastic primer for the bumper. Again, I cant recommend the paints4u stuff highly enough! Great kit at a great price and a great colour match!

What's it like to sand down and even out?

Just read chemical metal is a bastard to sand down. Think I'll stick to normal body filler.

Andres, did this ages ago, but still relevant to what you want to do, main difference is that you're using aerosols, but the blowing in tips are the same http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=93525.0

just use normal body filler for all repairs, U-Pol Smooth Seven is perfect for what you want, only I'm not sure you can get it in smaller quantities!
"Trade" do a VERY good high build primer in an aerosol, you would need to phone round a couple of local Motor Factors t find a supplier

Start with the easier repairs first, just to build confidence in the products, and to learn the different techniques, and remember that the lacquer has to cover a far greater area than the basecoat, so it polishes in invisibly
