sometimes it takes a while for any changes to become active

when we did staging and some other changes they didn't work until the ignition had been off and on a few times for some reason.

Fair enough...I'll go put it back to 'Automatic' and see what happens.

It may be that it is not dark enough.

Did you start the car and then go through the process? Not sure if that would make a difference.

Those are definitely the right settings, as they work on mine, try it for a couple of days and see how it goes.

I put the car in the garage to avoid the issue.

I sure did...and it made no difference.

I'll go try again...and leave it to see how it goes.

Sure I know the answer to this one, but...

If you have coming and going setup with your xenons, am I right in thinking the xenon bulbs will expire sooner time wise.

Just can't help thinking all those extra spark-ups get me closer to those mahoosive bulb replacement bills.

I don't think you need to worry too much as I asked my dealer about replacement bulbs and they have not had to replace any Xenon bulbs as yet. Plus my own experience of driving VW's for the past 18 years is that I have only had to replace one bulb (high beam) and that was on a second hand MKII GTI. Am I just lucky?

My B6 Audi was terrible for bulbs, normal and the extra bright ones. Though I did find the technique of smashing it to the side got a loose connection back together occasionally.

Common problem apparently.

Anyone else had to replace a xenon under normal usage and not fault driven?

Xenon lights tend to have a very good life span. My In-laws have a 2003 Octavia L+K which has factory xenons. The car has done over 140k now and is still on its original bulbs.

If you do need to replace them, they do not have to be as expensive as the dealers would like us to believe http://novablue.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c1=HID%20Parts%20and%20Accessories&c2=Xenon%20HID%20Bulbs&PHPSESSID=7141e4d28547addeb8b5c6361ad44cb6
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

you can set the coming home lights to use the fogs instead.

Cool that sounds worth doing as the fogs don't get used. Don't think I have even tried them yet
