a new belt is only about fifteen pounds, but the labour for a new pump is the same as having your belt done anyways. about 250 to 300 all in.

just an easy way to see if there's any water circulating 

My mother in laws partner had the same problem with his XK8, plastic impeller had gone on that too

See if there's a TPS nearby. They'll be less than VW for the same parts
