MK4 1999 1.8 GTi T Cambelt change

Hi I am hoping to buy a nice MK4 GTi 1.8T next week, done 150k and cambelt was last done on 80k so its due soon, if not now. Been quoted £350 from an VW indy including waterpump (ouch) and £267 for just cambelt kit suply and fit from another very good garage (BMW Indy) however I was thinking of buying a Cambelt kit and paying someone to fit...should I go to VW parts desk or are there decent pattern parts out there??

Been in a BMW for last few years so used to a chain driven engine, my last VW was years ago (MK1 1990 GTi Cabby) and the cambelt never needed doing

Sorry if this question has been asked a million times before!!  :rolleyes:

£350 isnt bad but can you not find a car with it already done an less miles  :smiley:

i think i paid £75 for the whole kit with my mates discount card from vw but didnt save on the fitting as the garage knocked the price up all in was around the £250 mark


 i drive a golf thats why im skint!!!!


losing interest in the golf and now not so skint !!!!!

I got genuine parts from TPS full cambelt kit inc water pump and got my local garage to fit it came to £240 all in  :smiley:

Well its a nice example, same owner 10 years, FSH long MOT and Tax, recent new tyres, battery and brakes etc..he will let it go for 900

Just ordered mine cambelt kit &  water pump £100 all in from dealer.
MK4 1.8t bored/stroked 2.0lt AEG crank, 83mm supertech pistons, intergrated rods, ACL race brgs, Flowed large port head, Supertech valves, All ARP bolts, GTX2871r turbo, Tial wastegate, 3" pipewerx dp, REVO stage 3 tune, Direct port water meth, MORE TO COME!!! Ready to go racing

Thats sounds good!! I called my local stealer (VW Southend) this morning and they wanted about £160 just for the full kit incl waterpump!! And the guy told me that cambelts are only good for 40k miles, fair enough but why tell people 80k when the cars are new? After 100 years of building cars VW have only just realised cambelts last half the time originally quoted? I dont think so, anyway found someone (contact of my grandads in the trade) to supply and fit a new cambelt for £160....

....all I have to do now is wait for the car to be driven back from Netherlands this weekend...gives me plenty of time to dig out all my polishing gear  :grin: and as much as I love the beemers I am looking forward to getting back to Veedubbin  :laugh:

There were a lot of belt failures when the mk4 was released hence the change  :smiley:
