Wiper Arms
« on: 06 May 2012, 18:18 »
Hi,

my 8v mk2 is a 1987 car and has the LHD wipers. The driver's side spindle hole has given up the ghost and now I need a replacement arm. I have had a quick look on VW heritage but they only seem to have the item to fit the 1989 car onwards. I know from a search of the forum that the spindle holes are too big for my small bumper car. Also, these appear to be for RHD.

Please can someone advise me. Would I be able to fit mk1 or perhaps golf cabriolet arms to my car. Are the parts that I need still available from the dealers? Also, I guess that I need them for a LHD car. Has anyone overcome this problem who can advise.

Many thanks....

Yes, just the arm.

The spline notches in the alloy in the hole have ground away over the years and the wiper arm no longer engages with the spindle on the motor. Sorry for the pretty blurry image....

If I can't get a part, I wonder whether an alloy wheel refurbisher could build up the alloy inside the hole then drill out a bit to get a fit on the spindle. I'm not sure how they would put the spline notches inside the hole though.

I would have thought that even RHD ones would do from a post 86 to pre 88, just as long as they are the small spline versions...

No they won't. They are bent the wrong way. I got caught out when I bought a set off ebay a few years ago.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I believe that the later rear wipers have the same (smaller) spindle size that I am looking for. Perhaps if necessary I could remove the end of a rear wiper arm and transplant this into damaged arm at the front?
