no i wouldn't say they were their to kill your pads prematurely (if this is what you mean?)
They are their to supposedly help heat dissipation.... or thats what i believe
Drilling, or grooving is not there to air cooling, as many think...the cooling is done via the internal vanes.
Nor is it to aid heat dissipation...in actual fact, drilling probablt REDUCES the ability to sink heat as there is less metal.
Drilling, or grooving, provides a gas path to exit from under the pad surface when the pad gets hot.
This helps stop glazing and allows the full face of the pad to contact the disc.
Sadly, many manufacturers fit drilled discs as the look 'pretty' where from a longevity perspective, grooving does the same job but without introducing so many failure points.
Ideally, a grooved disc that doesn't go all the way to the edge of the disc is best, as it doesn't provide a stress crack point...in saying that, I've never cracked a grooved disc, but I have every set of drilled discs I've ever used.
It's doubtful that you see the benefits on standard pad compounds..but go harder, and further up the heat range...and you notice the gains, as the expense of some additional noise.
