Major service
« on: 27 April 2012, 20:27 »
So I have a major service coming up in about 4 months. The car will have done approximately 82 000 miles and the previous service was a minor service including brake fluid change and a cam-belt and water pump change 2 years ago.

Since I'm not interested in paying VW's extortionate pricing I'm going to use an independent, but I'm also aware independents don't always fully adhere to the guidelines and forget certain things such as fuel filters etc.

What should my major service include?

Might as well get the VW stamp at that price.

if your handy with a spanner its easy  to do yourself. spark plugs, oil filter air filter pollen filter are all easy to do if access is ok.

coolant level should be checked weekly anyway. i do this with checking the oil brake fluid and top up the screenwash

i prefer to do things myself. it means my cars get the correct spec and high quality oil.

so many cars are neglected now a days

my missus ka shows 40000 miles for spark plugs and 50000 miles for a fuel filter

for the cost and how easy to fit they are i do them every year

Do you have fsh with vw stamps if so then wudnt you want to keep the value of your car to the max? If you ever come to sell it the prospective buyer(s) will look for this when choosing a car and if yours is missing some but has others then the buyer(s) are gonna think "huh why hasnt this seller not kept up with the history" remember first impressions are everything!!

Just take this into consideration!

Do people really care about this anymore ?  Surely as long as the car has been regularly serviced then that's all that matters.  And surely the money you save will even out any cash you would (potentially!) lose when selling.  That said my book is full of VW dealer stamps so guess Im just as guilty as everyone else
