Annoying noise from the engine bay.
« on: 24 April 2012, 23:51 »
I was just wondering if any of you were able to tell me what this whining noise is coming from my engine bay? It's 1.6 driver and when it first came into my hands it never used to make this noise, but its been sat on my driveway for about 6 months.

Does the noise change when you rev the engine?  Does it change when you drive the car.

Sounds like a bearing. somewhere.

Could it be the exhaust manifold leaking and making a strange whizz noise?  Just a guess.

Sorry about the late reply, i've only just had chance to have another look at the car. The noise doesnt seem to get louder when i rev the engine but i can't take it anywhere to drive as its got no tax or insurance :/

Not sure on how i can check if the exhaust manifold is leaking though.

Get a piece of tissue paper and run it around the gasket. If the paper blows, you have a blow. Simple.

What volts are you getting off the alternator if its low the bearings could be on the way out can't tell for sure alternator spins at one speed by the way constant supply off the belt could be worn belt rubbing  :undecided:

Disconnect the alternator and belt, then start the car.  If noise goes, then..

TBH Jon it was more bearings on the alternator I was heading for, as belt noise is louder usually, but hey no harm in testing good idea!
