Been using an A3 tdi for a week now as a courtesy car and its fantastic on fuel. I get 45-50 on average with a few sprints here and there and got 67mpg on my motorway commute.

You can pick one up for around 7k

Cheers, James

if it was my money either go for a 130pd (1.9) VAG
keep away from the 2.0 as they drink oil as much as 5 litres between services!!

or the M47/ M57 Bmw engines used in the E46 bmw 3 series.
(M47 is 2 litre and M57 2.9 litre BTW)

The later ones are too pricy and use silly runflats

a3's are w4nk. if you want something decent for the money then look no further than the mk5 GTTDI 140 (also comes with dsg if you are lazy). These cars munch miles for fun and are no where near as harsh as the unnecessary audi suspension.

alternatively see passat

If it had to stay VW - mk4 anni diesel. PD150 lump, come with nice wheels etc and tend to be a bit lower mileage too.

If not I'd be looking at BMW diesels probably 5 series as a bit bigger and comfier

few very good options here but my money would go on the seat ibiza cupra my mates standard 130 sport allmost humiliates my mapped 1.8t so the extra power for fun and a map etc would see some good results a very under rated car for the money i think i am dreading the day my mate gets a map on his as it will destroy all my glory
