New mk2 owner running issues
« on: 16 April 2012, 13:18 »
hi people

I've just sold my mk3 golf 16 v and now have myself a nice looking mk2 now,
I thought it may be a while before posting running issues however
I have a problem with it already.

yesterday I went to my grans house which is around a 5 mile trip
for me, the car ran fine on the way there  however on the way back
a whole different story.

I'll try and explain,

I got about 2miles from home and turned into a junction
to go up a slight hill, changed to 2nd gear and all of a sudden
the car started jerking. when pressing the accelerator pedal it would
jerk (no power)  then off the pedal sat on tick over (very rough) so it
cleared its self up the road and I was panicking to get home quick as didn't
want an AA call out a few yards from home, so all the way back it
did it again sounded like it wasn't firing on all 4

got back thank the lord.

after my crazy drive home and looking like I couldn't drive, I tried
turning the car over and was very reluctant on starting up, when
it did it was so rough and revs were going up and down however didn't
stall.

checked so far,

notes: the fuel pump was arming but its changed sound its very loud now
checked number 18 fuse (replaced to be sure)  :undecided:

hellllllllllllllllp

I've had it before where the float on the lift pump that sits in the tank stops moving so it always displayed half full when in fact it was completely empty. Alternativly i'd start checking plugs and leads, is your distributor cap full of oil? or go into the maintanance section and try setting it up yourself, timing ect. Word of advise to a new 16v owner, take it to a local vw legend for a tune up, timing ect. Well worth it. Happy dubbing

rob, I think there was just under quarter of a tank but not sure if the needles reading correct
i'll try putting £20.00 in tonight to see if it makes it better,

Unplug the main pump underneath car and listen for the lift pump to buzz. If it doesn't then its gone causing the main pump to struggle, if the lift pump is working it could be the main pump is fubar'd or very nearly dead? Not too sure without looking if the pump is pre or post filter, but change that also if you haven't since owning it
