Removing front discs quick check
« on: 01 June 2005, 19:59 »
Ok, i have the car ready to remove the front disc's is it the two bolts on the brake carrier i have to remove to get the disc off? I did try and remove them but i almost broke my arm! any tips on this?

also, are these the  two bolts that have to be renew as they are self locking aswell as the brake calliper bolts?

Cheers

Depends on model.
If you have 256mm brakes which are fitted to later 16v's, you will need to remove the carrier.
I think this is what you have fitted to yours. The 2 bolts are 17mm and are NOT self locking type, but are very tight.
In all honesty you may need some pretty beefy tools to get the bolts out, depending on how long they have been on the car. This is because the bolts tips actually stick out the other side off carrier, so corrode like f**k. Might be worth checking this.
Hope that helps.

Yep that the ones256mm and the carrier does have to come off, just need confirmation! I have soaked the two bolts all day in dw40 and if that will not budge them i have a blow tourch on stand by :)

So i can re-used thes bolts?

You can re-use the bolts as long as you don't f**k them getting them off
You need to spray WD40 on the end tips of the thread, look behind the disc, you will see them poking out

Get a decent size breaker bar on it, otherwise it won't be going anywhere

Just like a long bar with a head on it, basically like a rachet with a solid head instead for the socket.
Halfords sell them.
Don't bother doing the job unless you are equipped, otherwise you will just spend the whole day swearing
