What is the difference...

between stage 1 maps and stage 2,3,4 etc....?

Am I correct in thinking that tuning a car is basically telling it to put more fuel in? So is a stage 2 just telling it put more fuel than a stage 1 map in?...and why do the higher stages cost more?  :embarassed:

Stages are more of a marketing thing to be honest, I wouldn't read too much in to it.

In simple terms it tends to go like this

1 = Remap
2 = exhaust / intercooler / induction + remap
3 = bigger turbo / fuel pump etc + the above

At the end of the day the best way to look at it is what do YOU want from your car in terms of power and performance

I kind of understand the 'order' in which to mod your car for power etc, I am just wondering what is the difference between a stage 1 and stage 3? As I said is it just about how much fuel you tell it to put? Or does a stage 2 map tell sensors to to ignore reading X & Y?

It's not solely down to throwing extra fuel in; much of if is about getting rid of the extra heat you produce and managing your exhaust gas temperatures to stop your engine melting 

I'm sure someone with a greater understanding than me will explain it in more detail

^^ I get that bit, but like what does the tuner do on the laptop that makes the engine produce 50+ extra ponies?

I mean the tuner sat on the laptop I'm sure he doesn't have any bearing on flow of your incoming/outgoing gases, surely that is down to the mods on the car...

I know with my map from stage 1 to 2 gained 5bhp but torque was massive difference, also deleted post cat lambda sensor.  When I rang APR they said stage 2 map blends all add on mods together and post cat delete may see increase in power. Hence why stage 2 map is £40 if you have stage1 already, in states its free upgrade. With APR can adj map to fuel using via my cruise control stalk. Can turn map off, valet mode do if car goes I for serv won't rev over 3000rpm, 95 and 98 Ron settings.

Wouldn't that be down the mods that the owner has put on the car? How does the tuner control temperatures?

hmm i think you need to do some research into how and why an engine creates its power and heat, before you can begin understand the answer to that question. Its really not just a case of turning things up a bit.
