Buying my 1st Golf GTI in a couple of months and have my heart set on DSG and leather seats
Not sure if im buying local (Ireland) or gonna go to the UK to get one budget is about 9-9.5k Euros
Been doing some reading about servicing on these and sofar have figured out.
- 15,000km Oil change
- 60,000km DSG Fluid/Filter change
- 100,000km 1st Major service
Is there anything else i have missed that i should be looking out for (abit nervous as will more than likely be buying private and i hate to come across as a tyre kicker but i plan on keeping car for 3 years and looking after it to upgrade to a MKVI)
Thanks alot, if there is a sticky thread for these type of questions im sorry but i didn't see it.
Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'd also check the cambelt's been changed, depending on the age and mileage of any car that you're interested in. I'm not certain of the mileage that this needs changing - think it might be 60k miles (100k km?). However, the change interval is either the mileage limit or 4 years, whichever is reached first.
Some Mk5 Golfs have also suffered corrosion on the front wings; at the point where the wing is joined to the sill, and at the top of the wheel arch, above the wheel. The corrosion at the top of the wheel arch is caused by the plastic wheel arch liner rubbing the inside of the wheel arch flange. Inspect this area for missing or bubbling paint. Corrosion around the tailgate handle/badge is also not uncommon on early mk5's.
If a car's fitted with 18" Monza alloys, these are diamond cut with a lacquered finish. There's a limited number of firms that can refurbish these, so check carefully for kerbing and parking damage. Also check for whiteworm corrosion, which happens when water gets under the lacquer and the wheel surface has a cloudy white appearance. VW will replace wheels suffering from whiteworm under warranty if the car's less than 3 years old and the wheels don't have any other 'self inflicted' damage.
Good luck with finding the right car.
