Parcel shelf
« on: 29 September 2003, 16:12 »
I was going to mount my Kenwood Excelon 6x9's in the rear parcel shelf of my mkII but it seems like a rather flimsy bit that would collapse under the weight of the speakers. Has anyone made a custom parcel shelf from MDF before? if so what thickness did you use? I was thinking about 3/4 but that seems rather heavy for the boot lid to lift. How did you rig pivot points for it to lift? What about the lift straps? any ideas are greatl appreciated.

Cheers,
Brad

I have one made of 2 sheets of 18mm MDF covered in cloth with 2 6x9 holes cut out. the speakers bolt on underneath and it looks like there's nothing there.

I was about to butcher it for the cloth and mdf, but if you want it show me the money and it's yours :D

I may be interested. Where abouts are you at? what color is it? How much are you looking to get for it? Thanks in advance.

Its not really worth butchering your pacel shelf much better to make your own, it sounds better and you have a standard one to put back it if you sell the car! Shame some plank had all ready cut mine up allong with the dash to bodge some audio system in!  >:(

now I think about it I have an original standard one that no one has butchered in my car now, a standard one with 6x9 holes cut in it and my custom MDF one.

Dizzie, You are a bit too far away for me to come and get it right now. I guess I'll build my own. I appreciate the offer though Mate! :) What does your shelf use for a pivot point and for cords to lift with the boot lid. Or doesn't it. It wouldn't really matter to me but with the sprogs the boot comes in rather handy and propping up a parcel shelf to get at the boot sounds like a lump on the head waiting to happen with my luck.

Benjam_in, I know what you mean about butchering the parcel shelf. They are not made out of the toughest material known to man. I did that with my old Renault just to sell it though. didn't really care if the shelf folded in half or not.

I have a roll of black carpet and a bit of MDF big enough to do the shelf so I guess I'll start hacking. I won't be able to get at it this weekend though. I need to fit my alarm yet.

Cheers all
Brad

mine just had an inch or so cut out that sat over the original pivots. it was too heavy to lift with the boot. I just removed it cos it had one of those nifty plugs, filled up the boot and put the shelf back in. :)

I used a sheet of 18mm MDF, used the original shelf as a template, routed it out. put a nice edge on it. grip filled an extra piece of 18mm MDF at the front for strength and to allow me to drill into it for wooden dowels for the pivot points.

Sprayed the underside black and used techserts to allow me to bolt the speakers in and so not ruin the wood if I kept changing speakers about.

Used aluminium mesh to cover the speaker holes then covered with acoustic carpet bought from halfords. Black shoe laces used for the little lifting cords.

Cost me bugger all as I used everything at work, the only cost was the carpet and speakers and I got them half price by badgering the local sony centre.

Cheap as chips as a certain orange man says. ;)
