OK had a prob with mine kept cutting out for no appent reason wait then ran fine
changed everything elec then went to fuel side found a filter in the pump pickup cleaned that and it ran till i sold it 4 years later

this is a common fault with the mk3 golf and infact there is a whole thread about it on this very site,I had the same issues as you describe and changed alot of things,then tried the crank sensor and that totally sorted the problem and it's run fine ever since (2 years now) it is abit of a fiddly job to do but not difficult at all and takes no more than half and hour!! anyway I hope the car now runs sweet.

well they had the part as 58 quid and the rest was labour..

quite an expensive garage but I'd had enough of playing games with it..

My Anni had the crank sensor issue. Was fine from cold but as soon as it warmed up it cut out and would refuse to start until cooler. Hopefully mate that is your problem, get that sorted and all should be good.

my old mk3 golf use to do exactly same. did everything had a the ecu checked put a new crank sensor. leads plugs . and still had the same fault. what i found in the end was  a relay and it a common fault can remember the number off my head the solders crack and cause the car to cut out and not start
