Cold starting Problem driving my insane

ok i've started a new topic because this doing my head in and im not getting anywhere with it.  I have a cold start problem that seems to be getting worse.  At first it was just an intermittent problem but now its all the time.  If I leave the car for a few hours she wont start. 
The basic problem is that you can hear her turning over on the key but there's nothing.  After five minutes of turning her over you get a slight firing noise as if she is going to start.  Then eventually she will fire up and cut out immediately.  After a further five minutes of turning her over she will eventually fire and keep running.  The revs at idle will then start hunting up to 1600 rpm and finally stabilise around 1000 rpm.  After that she is fine and will start after one turn until i leave her for a few hours then i'm back to square one.  I have replaced ht leads, fuel filter, looked in the dizzy and it looks brand new, cleaned up various connections pissed about with the coil, checked voltage on battery and its at 12.98 or something and all sorts but still no joy.  Can anyone help as its driving me insane, its embarassing when you have to open your bonnet every morning.   Please please help thx

not en expert on 16v's but i had the same with my old 16v and turned out to be the cold start valve.

I used to dissconect the ISV hose and wires and it used to fire up straight away for some reason

cheers tried that but mine wont start with the isv disconnected

cant believe nobody has had this problem.  Someone must have had this problem and sorted it?

ok disconnected the cold start valve today and it didnt make a sh!te bit of difference.  What i did notice though was that there was white wispy smoke coming from the left hand side of the block as i was turning the engine over but it wasnt firin.  Also noticed that on the inside of the ht leads that go to the plugs there was a small amount of oil.  Could this have anything to do with the problem?

having the same problem with my valver at the moment.if i face her uphill on the drive she starts with no problems even if i leave her for weeks on end,but if she is faceing downhill or on the flat she will not start at all.cleaned the dizzie cap and leads but to no avail.HELP.

sorry to hear your having the same problem i thought there would be mor epeople on the forum with a problem like this that has been cured but it doesnt seem to be the case.  Its interesting that if you park her uphill she will start everytime, i will have to give that a go a sits embarassing havin to mess about under the bonnet every morning.  What was more embarassing was trying to get her started in the campsite at gti international in front of about 50 golf nutters who all just looked on in shock.  Lol so embarassed, sorry i cant help with your problem  :embarassed:

i have just been under the hood for the last hour and still can't get her going.turns over fine but just not fireing.checked the dizzie cap and leads,cleaned them but to no avail.

try cleaning up all the electrical connections and sensors on the side of the head.  Bit of emery paper and wd40 might help also check all earths, clean them up and a bit of petroleum jelly. Clean up contacts on the coil,  try another battery? just suggestions
