stalling mk2 golf!
« on: 29 May 2005, 17:34 »
Hey guys,

I have a mk2 1.6 driver with pierburgs finest carburation system a wonderous example of overengineering! It is usualy fine at idle when warm but the other day kept wanting to stall at idle. If i didn't apply revs then it splutters, the battery light flashes a bit and then it cuts out. The car drives fine under normal driving conditions. I belive the water pump to be on its way out as i listened to it by putting a long screwdriver to casing and my ear to the handle and it sounded rough. If the water pump were on its way out, or a bearing seized or sumet, would the extra strain of this place enough load on the engine to cause it to stall at idle? Or could it be something else?

Cheers dudes

Acko

i would say that you have found the problem. if the bearing are seizing up the the pulley will be harder to turn thus putting strain on the engine. take the pump belt off and run it from cold for a few seconds to determine

check the warm air flap too as that can sometimes stick. Had the same problem a few months ago. Failing that, take the carb off and give it a good clean out; loads of s**t ends up in it!!

Check my 2e2 FAQ sticky:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=18871.0

But it sounds to me like you're suffering from carb icing, check the warm air feed pipe is connected to the shroud round the inlet manifold, check the 2 vac pipes are connected to the side of the airbox and make sure the flap actually opens as Rhyso said :)

Also you might want to check the inlet manifold preheater and carb heater are both working as per the FAQ and that coolant is circulating freely round the carb (it should get boiling hot when the engine is up to temp!)
