Centre arm rest/console remove?
« on: 22 March 2012, 16:05 »
I've got a really annoying rattle inside the centre console unit at 3200rpm. It's so irritating but I'm certain it's coming from there as when I open the arm rest it's really loud.

Anyone know how to break the console down so I can find the rattle from inside? Cheers

No idea how to pull it apart but could it be your MDI cable? Mine rattle/knocks from time to time.

i found the problem

took the arm rest console apart and test drove and the rattle was even louder but i couldn't pin point it.

took the handbrake roller blind trim off and the rattle was gone

only does it at around 3200rpm to about 4000rpm. really annoying loud buzzing

fixed it by packing out the piece with felt tape. what a pain in the arse to get the console back together as it was dark by the time i got it sorted!

test drove and rattle gone but can just hear other rattles instead... this one was really loud though so glad to get it fixed

Wish mine rattled as quietly as yours
I have read about this rattle elsewere.
Could you point me to a supply of felt tape as I plan on doing my doors in a couple of weeks time

no seriously this one is REALLY loud.

it must depend on temperature or something cos it comes and goes some days but its always at a certain RPM range so certain vibrations set it off.

if i open the arm rest it was so loud it almost drowned out engine noise.

i just go the felt tape off ebay. seems to have done the trick

did you take you B pillars off? is it just 1 screw under the airbag badge? I've got a rattle on both b pillars and boy front door cards which i need to sort with some tape too.

Q to you guys who've developed rattles etc.
Have you been driving conservatively or been enjoying your car ?

In my case it's a mixture of both but my main problem is the rediculous amount of speed humps in my area!!

Mines only done commuter miles

I just eased the trim up as shown in the vw tpi and fitted the tape as its the overlap of the two panels that sometimes rattled on mine.

ok will give it a go.

the handbrake buzzing seems to be fixed now

just for the front doors and b pillars and a nightmare of a rattle in the passage footrest/seat area to sort now. the one in the centre of the dash is intermittent so can live with it

shouldn't make a difference. how you drive it or the life it leads regarding interior rattles.

i only use my car for B-road blasts but it always immaculately clean, always garaged, fair weather use only, always warmed thoroughly before taking above 4000rpm and warmed down before i leave it.

and mine still rattles.
