horrible vibrations and noise

1 problem found the heat guard/cover was loose so rattling when rev'd so clamped that.
still vibrating tho.. havent given up yet

No, i'm wrong if its totally normal when revved at standstill then it can't be the manifold, my thought process was based on it sounding 'like a diesel' and having had head work done recently.
i've heard cracked/damaged and badly/wrongly fitted exhaust manifolds and they can be very quiet at tickover because its not under so much pressure but will sound like an old tractor when revved whereas a sick gearbox will usually whine and be difficult to use so to be clattering like a diesel it would have to be on its last legs.
I know you've said it sounds like its coming from the gearbox but it can be deceptive if you can only hear it from the driving seat.

my gearbox whines,  but its a definate whine and sounds like its from the gearbox.

well thanks for taking the time to explain anyway.. im tempted to put it down to 'just a noise that it makes' but thats not good enough

ok, gonna go and see 3 diff garages tomorrow and see what the common opinion is.. then of course bug you again for a cheap fix :lol:

im adament thats its really there and im not imagining it 

forgot to say that when it was up on the ramps ( shes amazinly clean underneath!) the 'oil leak' that i sa was deffo the mess laft behind after the head was done... so infact its not leaking oil at all

would the cat being loose cause it to vibrate?

If the cat has broken up inside it could cause rattling and extra noise when its revved.

If you look in the mk3 maintenance section there are lots of threads and pictures of the various nether regions of the mk3.
