That gauze is a good idea, however since its made from the same material wouldn't there be the same chance of the gauze breaking up?
The scourer I am using is pretty tough. I've used one on my pots and pans for a while and it hasn't broken up or rusted yet. Since it will be having a much easier time inside my catch can I will take the risk.
You do have the right to an I told you so though.

yeah the gauze could break but i would of thought stainless gauze would be better but after searching the price is pretty steep

It has been mentioned before about putting something inside it like a panel off a cheese grater so it has such gauze type effect, without actually being able to be sucked up..
Wire mesh could also work..
