i thought so, had a mechanic to look for me few weeks ago and he recons i need the CAT changing, the bracket snapped as well but got tha welded but rattling still exists so it must definitely be the CAT, i will probably do both CAT and Lambda. i have ordered the diagnostic kit anyway and can't wait to see the codes my baby will throw up. i will let you guys know. in the mean time where can i get a cheap CAT from without any fault tho? :) :)

Guys i got the kit and did a scan on the Vehicle, it only provided these codes on the Engine.

16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor - Range/Performance
17916 - Idle Control Sys: Upper Regulation Limit Reached

could the above codes have something to do with my fuel consumption and how do i go about fixing these, i don't even know what the second one is. however i have done 82 Miles on a 15Litre petrol.

put the same in the golf and counting, will let you know how many miles it will get me. HELPPPP guys

There's nothing wrong with your fuel consumption.

And those codes are probably old historic codes.

the lambda sensor could still be the cause, as long as its giving a reading then the ecu will assume its fine, but that doesnt mean the reading its giving is correct, a universal 4 wire sensor is only about £20 so its not gonna break the bank to try it.

id have thought the bmw engine would be better with mpg anyway, unless its a 6 cylinder

Ant1981, the 82 miles on the 15 litre petrol was completed on my BMW 2.0 engine 4 cylinder. As mentioned earlier the 15 litre petrol I put in the golf 1.8 20v is nearly finished and I've only done 53 miles, doubt it would get to 65, so now    it proves the golf is taking more petrol than the BMW for that engine size, I will definitely get the cat nd lambda sensor done and some engine service for the filters, hope it would work, it will be heart breaking if it doesn't
