1999 MK4 1.8 20v GTi non-turbo - Fuel Consumption
« on: 19 March 2012, 01:14 »
hi i am wondering someone could advise me on this, i bought the above few weeks ago and what i have realised is, its taking so much petrol than my 2003 BMW 3 series 2.0 Engine. (sorry folks), i thought the bmw was supposed to use more petrol than my mk4 considering the engine size but this is not the case here. i read posts and people suggested Lambda Sensors and maybe CAT, went to the garage and they said it probably isn't the sensor since there isn't any engine warning light on my dash. i feel so lost and could only think of selling it. its done 120k miles. i don't want to let it go, i really enjoy driving it. its a 3dr type. HELP!!!!!!!!!

If there are no major faults or issues, a good service always helps.

Driving times/style/tyre pressures etc can also majorly affect mpg, but you probably knew that!

The tyres are good, I get the odd 21-30 mpg on normal drive in town, fourth gear and between 30-40 mph,
It just doesn't look right, could you point me to where I could get the diagnostic kit. I'm also planning of proper service but quote from vw is 250 quid, any suggestions guys, thanks

Not really made a note but would few mins, maybe 10? Don't get me wrong , i luv this car nd want to fix any possible fault but on my 2.0 engine BMW, I could do 20 quid on petrol for a week, that's about 100 miles but the golf doesn't go over 60 miles then have to re-fill, its doin my heading trying to figure out wat could be wrong

10 mins isn't really enough time for it to warm up and average out really, so you're doing very well to be getting what you do in that case.

Was the BMW doing the exact same journey?

yeah sort of, well what i have done now is put 20 in my bmw and going to use it for the week and see how far i get with that then will do the same for the golf. hopefully this test should proof something, but in the mean time i am thinking of changing the lambda sensor and CAT, i hear a rattling noise in the exhaust when driving, not major but i do hear it on and off.
