AGU timing belt loose?
« on: 13 March 2012, 13:55 »
Hi All,

I got my timing belt and water pump changed in December last year but stupidly didn't get the hydraulic tensioner/dampener replaced at the same time! The last couple of days I've noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine bay at low revs, it doesn't happen all the time but does happen when stationary as well, At first I thought I was a lose heat shield or something but I cant see anything lose. After a search I found a couple of posts on other forums about the dampener being the problem so took the timing belt cover off to have a look and it seems a bit loose, I took a video of how loose it was, do you guys think this is normal:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEr8t6vqOgk&feature=youtu.be

It wasn't making the rattling noise when I started the car up with the timing belt cover off either so I'm not really sure what's going on or if the belt should be that loose.

Thanks in advance for your help

Can you twist the belt through 90degrees with sensible finger pressure? Or more than 90degrees?

I'm not sure how long its been like that, as I say I got the belt and water pump done in December. Its only started making the rattling noise in the last few days so I assume that's the tensioner bouncing on the pulley then?

Do you think I shouldn't drive it until I've got it sorted? I fell like a complete twit for not getting the tensioner done at the same time now

Someone please confirm, our take a longer better video to be sure. Dont want to give you duff advice.

Could the belt jump a tooth? Can you reach the idler pulley? You should be able to tell if its loose.
