I have a noise that sounds like wheel bearings but its the uneven wear from my Dunlops.

Yea it seems to be common with all front wheel drive cars with the modern tyre design.

Called Heel Toe wear and looks like this

Heel and Toe wear occurs when the tread-block passes through the contact area. The leading edge of the block is compressed at the moment of contact - which slows down the rate rotation on that particular tread block. The trailing edge of the block has to accelerate to catch up with the general rotation of the tyre and "flicks" through the point of contact causing more wear at that point.

I have just fitted a set on Continental Contactsport 5 and notice they have a joint between the blocks on the inside of the tyre which may prevent this.

Switching the tyres from left to right should even up the tyre wear as long as they are not directional.

Had this on my mk5 GT TDI PD 170 with Bridgestones on the standard 17" wheels. The rumbling became noticeable at around 16k miles and got progressively louder over time. The 'sawtooth' wear pattern on the inside edge of the tyre tread could be felt and was easily visible.

I'm keeping a watch on my mk6, which unfortunately also came with Bridgestones.

The Dunlops on my R don't seem to be suffering in this way, but that might be because I run high tyre pressures. However I'm interested in identifying the cause of this problem and don't believe it has been properly explained anywhere. The Heel/toe wear of individual tread blocks mentioned by mike is a factor of the toe-in and camber of the tyre but I can't see how it would make the tyre go 50p-shaped.

Has anyone ever counted the number of flat spots which form on the affected tyres?

My GT is very noisy. I put it down the the cheepo ditchfinders that the dealer had fitted on the front before I bought I. I soon changed them for a pair of Dunlops to match the rear, and while the noise was lessend, it was still there.

I'm driving a 1.4S courtesy car at the moment, with 205-55-16 Hankooks. This is a little quieter that the 18" Dunlops on the GT, but there is still that wheel bearing rumble noise coming from the rear.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
