Over the years, I have seen many cars ruined because of pattern parts, Theirs still plenty of great Mk2's out there well worth looking after, but, once someone decides to start using pattern items, then usually that starts putting that particular car into decline, even to the point that when that car gets moved on to a new owner, they are less inclined to properly look after that car... thats why the mint cars are mint, and the others are not!

We need to start preserving what cars are left!

Just my opinion

Thom

And it's a fine opinion.... but as I already said, all this fuss just because someone suggested an alternative to the bonnet earth strap.

TBF I have always gone to VAG myself for parts if a build or restoration needs expensive parts I've always gone secondhand VAG, but to put it into persepective any after market parts I have used has generally been poorer quality unless it was engineered items and not mass produced!
Things like air mass sensors and temperature controls just don't last?

Mint or Solid cars need preserving.... I totally agree...

BUT & This is a BIG BUT.... Due to the lack of Genuine parts available either from VW or Classic parts in Germany there is a need to break some crap cars so that those of us who want to make a "Mint" car can actually get the parts to do it...

I breaks my heart to do it at times - BUT that's why I buy rot boxes & non runners MK2's and do what I do...

My Mate is in the process of re-building (He's just had a full top notch respray in Hellios Blue done) a MK2 Syncro that he bought in Spain and it's a fantastic feeling seeing parts from scrappers being used to restore his new pride and joy.... Even he as a MK2 specialist finds it hard to understand why so many parts are now obsolete & since he did his last 16V MK2 how many parts have been dropped in recent months.....

^^^ try finding decent oem stuff for a mk1.

It is sad but I suppose to VW spare parts for these cars is chicken feed for profit.

I know what you mean - I read through your build thread and saw just how hard it was for you to find decent parts.

At least VW learnt from the mistakes with the MK1 about body rot!!

So hopefully MK2's should be around much longer & with more being left hopefully the demand for parts will keep VW churning them out - if not constantly at least every couple of years or so....

Well - I kicked something off there.

I would rather go OE but the strap was already there when I got the car.

Don't you just love this forum - I do!

You'll get that a lot in the Mk2 section.

It's because we care.
