People tend to forget that these OEM parts were designed in the 1980's.

If a pattern part is better, I'll fit that.

Designed in the 80's!?.. Pah, and the rest, so many parts get carried over (especially electrical items) so a large number were probably designed in the 70s.

I agree with this up to a point....

If a genuine part has lasted 20 years, then I would prefer to fit that part again....

Problem with Pattern parts is that they "might" look better and may do just as good a job - BUT for how long...

Lets be honest "Some" pattern parts are just SH!T and cheapen the look of a nice MK2...

There are always improvements to be made over some OEM parts but some are truly awful....

But thats why place's like this are good as you can get decent feedback on what's what through other peoples experiences...

Agree to a point too.

But come on, we were talking about a piece of wire from the bonnet to the body.

  back at you!

When it comes to bigger parts or many mechanicals you are correct and I share the same view.  But, there are certain things that can be improved on. Electrics being one of the main ones.

You do know that VAG et al don't make everything that goes into their cars.

E.g. like the Fuel injection system in the MK2 16v is made by Bosch, lights by Hella etc..

Over the years, I have seen many cars ruined because of pattern parts, Theirs still plenty of great Mk2's out there well worth looking after, but, once someone decides to start using pattern items, then usually that starts putting that particular car into decline, even to the point that when that car gets moved on to a new owner, they are less inclined to properly look after that car... thats why the mint cars are mint, and the others are not!

We need to start preserving what cars are left!

Just my opinion
