Could someone with an RCD510 and factory Bluetooth, please pop their radio out and take a picture of the plug into the back of it please?
@dubber 36
Here's a link of the manual I have
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/53055884/Bluetooth%20retrofit%20manual.pdf
Lookup on page 6 of the manual. It shows wiring configuration you need to have for RCD 510. In summary the mic needs to be connected direct to bluetooth module.

Sorry to hi jack this thread, but would this be why voice commands don't work after retrofitting RNS 510 in place of the RCD 510?

The firmware on the RNS supports it (and it has the star button) but the RNS simply can't "hear" me say anything. Bluetooth phone calls work fine. So I am thinking the cable is set up for RCD 510 and needs to be set up for RNS 510 ?

So is the piggy back cable what plugs into the RCD/RNS ? or is it something else?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, the piggy back cable is an aftermarket lead for retro fitting the OEM bluetooth module. Your car will have the required wiring for the RCD510 and bluetooth as part of the original loom, but will not have the correct connections for voice control on the RNS.

As your mic wiring will be part of the original loom to the roof console, it will be difficult to re-plug the other end into the RNS, rather than the bluetooth module where it currently is. I would suggest that the easiest way to get yours to work would be to fit another aftermarket mic (like the one in my kit) and connect it into the bluetooth plug (small black one) in the big multi plug that connects into the back of your RNS.

I hope that makes sense.

Simon

Nearly there.

Thanks to everyone who has given some input so far. It seems that the mic has to be plugged directly into the module. the multi plug into the module has some spare terminals. No's 6,7,10,13,14,15 and 16. There will be a special prize for the first person to come along and tell me the correct terminals for me to connect the mic into.

Is that on the radio or the bluetooth module?

HERE are the pinouts for the back of the RCD510.

And HERE are the pinouts for the bluetooth connector.

Not sure if you have seen these.

The way my RNS510 is wired is, the Microphone +/- pins are connected to the RNS510 microphone input pins and the RNS510 microphone output pins are connected to the Bluetooth microphone input pins.
I think the RCD510 should be the same.

So Microphone +/- goes to Pin 1 and 7 on the RCD510 connector and Pins 9 and 4 from the RCD510 are connected to Pins 11 and 12 on the bluetooth module.

Do I get the special Prize

Hi Simon, thanks. What a ball ache for something I probably won't use! I've disabled the star button via VAG COM so it just repeats the navigation commands for now. That will do, unless I decide voice control is absolutely needed. I was hoping it would be something I could change quickly so it would work. Shame, but again, thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Scott

It is a ball ache. When the dealer says you can't retro fit parts, in a way they are right. You can't without a bit of modification or aftermarket parts.

What beats me is why they can't just make one wiring loom for a Golf that would run every possible option and fit that into every car. Instead, they make a loom specific to the spec of each particular car. Surely the logistics of this outweigh any financial saving my cutting back on a few meters of wire and a couple of connectors that cost pence.

Lol that's what I thought they would do as it makes sense to have a single loom that does everything - but maybe they do it to discourage retrofits.  :undecided:

Also if you don't want to loop through the RCD510 then the Mic +/- goes to Pin 11 and Pin 12 on the bluetooth module end.

I have to admit I didn't have any issues with the RCD510 it just worked.  I can take the radio out at the weekend if necessary, but I dont really want to as I got away without breaking any tabs on the front.  Although I am not sure the aerials are connected that well.  It seems the radio receptions not been as good since I retro fitted.
