ok sounds good...

to compress the new one...is it just a case of getting it in position and pushing down on the wing to compress and get the nut done up on the top mount??

just go to halfords, there only £15 and there pretty decent.

no point risking taking a spring in the face

No you reassemble the suspension components off the car. Take a look at some of the how to guides on here.
