That's what I have been thinking all along to be honest! New v5 with correct engine number and size/power then when go to insure it, will already he through on their system!

How much tax a year is it for a 2003 1.8t? Or as engine from 99, would I pay pre 2001 rates? Wishful thinking on the last bit I take it?

Re-register the car with the bigger engine is what I meant. Then insure it as such.

If only it was that simple, the DVLA will of course need to know and will update the records to show it is a 1.8t etc but insurance wise you will need to inform them that it has been converted from a 1.4, failing to do so would be illegal, at the end of the day they will check and you will be in deep water if you have not told them.

Tax would be based on date of 1st reg.

In simple terms, when you have finished the work you will need to write to the DVLA informing of the engine change, they will update the vehicle records and logbook to show the new engine number and code.

This does not mean however that you can then just insure the car as a 1.8t as that would not be declaring the engine swap, at the end of the day the car started life as a 1.4 and you cannot hide or get away from that fact.

It is as simple as that, I am not sure why people cannot see this.

Well spoke to my brother, and he says you do have to declare the engine swap as a modification, and would probably need specialist insurance.

They won't care that it will just be like 1000s of other 1.8t Golf's on the road, they see it as a car with a non-standard engine in it, just like the example above.

This is becoming a pain in the arse, not that I would but I can see why thousands keep thier mouth shut and enjoy cheaper tax and insurance..

It's going to be a 1.8t, why can't I insure it as that!

So engineers report only if DOWN sizing.. will have to take it to a garage for them to sign work off as safe, easy, get mot on it, obviously same time and send details off to dvla... Sound about right?
